Overview of Wisconsin's Electricity Market

Wisconsin is a regulated electricity market, which means that homeowners are not permitted to choose their electricity supplier and instead are limited to the utility provider that services their area.

The major Investor-Owned Utilities (“IOUs”) in Wisconsin are:

● Wisconsin Electric Power Company (“We Energies”)

● Wisconsin Power and Light Company (d/b/a Alliant Energy)

● Consolidated Water Power Company

● Madison Gas and Electric Company

● Dahlberg Light & Power Company

● North Central Power Company

● Pioneer Power & Light Company

● Superior Water Light & Power Company

● Westfield Milling & Electric Light Company

● Wisconsin Public Service Corporation

● Northern States Power Company (d/b/a Xcel Energy)

● Northwestern Wisconsin Electric Company (North Central Power Company)

A map of the IOU coverage areas can be found below; a more detailed version can be found here. Partner EPC installation coverage area as of 10/14/20 overlaps with We Energies, Alliant Energy and Madison Gas & Electric service territories. Only those three utilities will be included in this market guide. If EPC partner coverage area expands to include service territories of other utilities in the future, this market guide will be updated with details of those utilities.

In addition to the above IOUs, there are over 80 smaller municipal and cooperative-owned utilities. Our EPC partners will not be servicing these utilities at this time.

Solar Rights. Wisconsin has several laws that protect a resident's right to install and operate a solar or wind energy system. These laws cover zoning restrictions by local governments, private land use restrictions, and system owner rights to unobstructed access to resources. For more information, visit DSIRE’s website.

Net Metering. The Public Service Commission of Wisconsin (PSC) requires all regulated utilities to allow net metering for systems up to 20 kW in capacity. The order applies to investor-owned utilities and municipal utilities, but not to electric cooperatives. For more information, refer to the Utility Overview section below for each utility as well as DSIRE’s website.
